Bleeding Kansas
* This was a series of bloody confrontations between the North (pro-slavery) and the South (anti-slavery)
* Most famous was John Brown's Pottawatomie Massacre (first)
* Fighting started 1856, but tensions and anger started 1854
* Blood was shed over the issue as to whether Kansas should be a slave or free state
* Blood was also shed in the Senate
* Senator Charles Sumner was beaten by Congressman Preston Brooks
* Sumner lives(Had to be treated for 3 1/2 years from brain and nerve damage) and Brooks stays in Senate (reelected)
